Overwhelm happens to all of us sometimes. When life piles it on, it can be hard to find calm. Here are three simple tools I often share with clients to help them manage overwhelm.
Here are three simple tools you can try next time overwhelm shows up:
1. Remember to breathe.
Pause and take a moment to notice your breath. Let it ground you and bring you back to calm.
2. Try 4-4-4 breathing.
Breathe in slowly for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, then breathe out for 4 seconds. Repeat a few times until you feel more centered.
3. Ride the wave.
Imagine your feelings like ocean waves — they rise, peak, and eventually pass. You don’t have to fight the overwhelm; just allow it to flow through you gently.
I personally like to use all 3 of these tools at the same time. I observe my breath. I make sure to take in deeper breaths when experiencing overwhelm. I do the 4-4-4 breathing as I imagine my nervous system calming. Sometimes 4-4-6 is helpful when you need deeper calming, letting the exhale be longer. I then imagine myself riding a wave on a surf board or boogie board, knowing it will pass. Much like the wave in the ocean, it can’t last forever! The wave helps me remember the overwhelm will pass. It always does.
Try these tools and see which ones feel most helpful.
